In the lead up to the International Youth Day on 12th August 2018, Ignite Trade Africa, organized a forum dubbed “Youth Engagement For SDGs” that was held at the United States International University(USIU)- Africa, Nairobi on 10th August 2018. This initiative was designed to mobilize and activate the power of young people to drive the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Africa. The theme of this forum was “Creating Safe Spaces for Engagement of Youth Enterprises for the Implementation of SDGs”. Our chief guest being Dr. Manu Chandaria.
The goal of the forum is to provide an open and inclusive platform for young people in Africa, SDG Achievers, Development Partners and the private sector to dialogue and address pertinent issues affecting the youth. 85% of the World’s population of the youth live in developing countries. Approximately 255 million young people live in the 19 countries with the largest poverty gaps. 15 out of these 19 countries are in Sub-Saharan Africa. The youth also constitute 41% of the world’s unemployed people.
The Youth are the generation with the most to gain or lose depending on the extent to which these goals are achieved. It is therefore critical that there is enhanced engagement in highlighting and expanding opportunities for the youth to take on key leadership roles in understanding, promoting and supporting efforts to help the world achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
